The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints owns and maintains over a hundred "mountain recreational properties" (MRPs) in the state of Utah. Many members of the Church are unaware of these properties and scheduling the use of these sites is a potpourri of manual processes. These two factors have led to the under-utilization of the Church's MRPs. In addition, many ward and stake units may be paying more money to use commercial or government properties.
One success story is that of Heber Valley Camp. The Heber Valley Camp website was created by and is maintained by Dave Kenison. This site has proven very successful in making members of the Church aware not only that the camp exists, but also of the amenities available there. Also, the site has a calendaring system where participating stakes can view their scheduled camp dates as well as where individuals may make reservations for personal camping trips.
This is an important venture for the Church because of its heavy involvement in the girl's camp program instituted though out the Church. Each ward or stake has a week long camping trip for the young women, which is viewed as an opportunity to provide a fun as well as spiritual experience for the young women. It is the Church's desire to ensure that each stake or ward has access to an adequate place to hold these camps.
In response to the lack of utilization of the Church's MRPs and in light of the success of the Heber Valley Camp website, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has request that we, a consulting team from Brigham Young University, analyze and design a system which builds upon the success of the Heber Valley Camp website.
The Church desires, and we have limited our efforts to, the analysis and design of a web site for 29 camps in the Utah North Area. We have not built any more than a prototype to demonstrate our grasp of the project.
