SirsiDynix: Segment Share Maps

SirsiDynix

Company Background

SirsiDynix was created in June 2005 through the merger of Dynix Corporation with Sirsi Corporation. Both companies have an excellent track record as leading information technology providers to libraries and consortia worldwide. The new company will build on its constituents' strengths while providing more opportunities for technological innovation and growth.

Project Summary

Due to the dynamic nature of the library technology industry, the number and complexity of related markets, and the number of players within each market, it is difficult to gain a high level view of the library systems markets. Similarly, since many vendors are privately owned, it is difficult to ascertain the exact market power that each organization commands within the industry. Additionally, several private and government entities have budgetary and regulatory power in library technology markets. Understanding how each of these organizations interacts with the market and the vendors that play in them should improve the ability of SirsiDynix to compete in a more effective manner.

The need for this understanding can partially be met by having a graphical display of the ILS space and related markets, including their participants. SirsiDynix engaged our team to address this problem. The main benefits of having such a map could include the following:

• Convey information to executives and sales representatives in an easy-to-understand fashion
• Provide an overview of the library systems and technologies markets
• Highlight markets that may be under/over served to aid in strategic decisions
• Highlight potential opportunities for creating partnerships with other vendors
• Identify areas of potential product extension, development or expansion

Our team was able to gather information on the players in the ILS market, 11 other ILS related markets, and the government and private organizations that interact therein. This information is displayed in data-driven bubble graphs, which depict the size of different vendors and the segment share of the vendors in each market. These maps can be updated with any changes in the future. Update instructions were included.
