One of the missions of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is to spread the gospel through all forms of technology. For the past 30 years the Church’s publications have been print-centric, but technological advances provide new media channels that increase communication opportunities.
In 2002, the Church streamed live video of General Conference over the Internet. The number of users was double what was anticipated, which caused technical difficulties and in increase in price for the service.
Live streaming of General Conference and other events may continue if a fixed cost structure is implemented.
The objective for the consulting team is to conduct media content streaming research. The project team researched current leading media streaming technologies, methods to reduce the cost per viewer, standards in the media streaming space, and the affect of Digital Rights Management.
The team helped the Church gain deeper insight into the different media streaming technologies available, current industry standards, future trends, and the businesses that provide or use them.
