Web Business Competition

Congratulations Web Business Competition Winners!

The Web Business Competition is a sub category of the Business Plan Competition that offers an additional $5000 cash prize to the best proposed Web business venture. For more information send us an email to wbc@byu.edu.

What is Web business?

A Web business is any business that is empowered or focused on the use of technology or information systems. Today, this is mostly done with web-based technologies. Web entrepreneurs use technology as a key product or process in their business strategy.

Does my business plan fulfill the requirements of a Web business?

Each Web business plan submitted must meet the two following requirements:

  • The web business must be profit-motivated and have the ability to generate revenue for its stake holders.
  • The business model must rely on a website to operate profitably. In other words, your web business should not be able to succeed without a website.

Can I enter the Web Business Competition along with the regular BPC competition?

Yes. As our mission is to promote the expansion of new, innovative Web business ventures, we highly encourage those with Web business plans to enter the Business Plan Competition. Your submission in the Web Business Competition will have no effect on your entrance into the regular competition. Our competition should be viewed as an added bonus for those plans that are web-based.

Can my business plan win the Web Business Competition even if it wins other awards?

Yes. Your performance in the Business Plan Competition will not affect our judges’ decision in choosing the best web business plan. If your team does not progress in the Business Plan Competition, it could still win our competition, and likewise, if your business plan does not advance in our competition then it could still do well in the Business Plan Competition.

How do I enter the competition?

The Web Business Competition is an integrated part of the Business Plan Competition and it shares the same submission deadline. You enter by submitting three (3) additional copies of your business plan when you turn it in to the Center for Entrepreneurship (470 TNRB).

What is the judging process and timeline for the Web Business Competition?

Our panel of judges will choose 3 or 4 finalists based purely on the written plans themselves. Finalists will be announced before day's end on Tuesday, March 10. Finalists will need to give a 10 minute presentation followed by 5 minutes of Q&A at the competition’s final event. This year’s final event will take place on Wednesday, April 01, 2009, from 4:45pm to 6:00pm in 120 TNRB in front of a live student audience and a panel of professional judges.
