Students and Faculty Participate in International Technology Conferences
A group of students and faculty will travel to China this May to participate in the fifteenth annual International Association for Management Technology conference and the ninth annual Global Chinese Conference on Computers in Education.
“This is our first opportunity to go to the people of China and talk with them directly about some of the ideas we’ve been developing as we’ve worked on the eCANDLE project,” said Stephen Liddle, director of BYU’s Center for eBusiness.
To prepare themselves for the international stage, Clint Rogers, Corey Beahm and Nick Hecht, members of eCANDLE, will first stop at BYU–Hawaii to present their project to students and faculty there. They will test the program’s concepts, conduct surveys and gauge student and faculty reactions to the presentation. Initial testing was conducted at BYU and this second test at the Hawaii campus will help fine-tune the presentation for the conference in China.
ECandle is a nonprofit foundation created to teach people in developing countries business and technology skills they need to elevate their economic standing and become proficient in the business world. By compressing classes and courses, the group hopes to reach a large audience and teach, in a short amount of time, basic skills that will have long-term impact on individuals and societies.
Clint Rogers, who just completed a PhD in instructional psychology and technology, will present his paper “Utilizing Mobile Technologies for Economic Development: The eCandle Project” at the technology conference.
“After this visit, our following step is to see if we can develop a viable business plan for eCandle based on the feedback we get,” Liddle said. “We’ll have a lot of material to digest.”
Liddle, and Jon Mott, director of BYU’s Center for Instructional Design will present their paper “Mobilized E-Learning: Promoting Quality in the Student Learning Experience” with Peter Chan, a faculty member from BYU–Hawaii at the education conference.
“We’re creating academic deliverables, talking to our colleagues in the field about what it is we’re doing and looking for reactions from them as we test these new academic ideas,” Liddle said.
