The Kevin and Debra Rollins Center for eBusiness announced its winter 2006 outstanding volunteers and board member in its semiannual advisory board meeting in April.
The center’s executive committee selected the student winners.
“We watch throughout the semester to see who is shaping into an above average leader,” said Happy Larsen, program manager for the Rollins Center for eBusiness. “It was so hard this semester to choose because all of our student leads were wonderful, but three really went above and beyond.”
Recent graduates Brent Dance, 25, who earned his BS in business management; Patrick Hillery, 25, who earned his MISM; and Nick Hecht, 26, who earned his MISM were recognized for their service and commitment to the center.
Dance was named Outstanding Student Lead for his dedicated two-year service at the center, and Hillery and Hecht were named Volunteers of the Year.
“I saw some great opportunities to better serve and become more effective in business,” Dance said.
As a volunteer, or student lead, Dance oversaw the annual eBusiness Day sponsored and organized by the center.
Planning that event was no small feat. Dance said it was an intense experience, from the initial push to invite program speakers and company showcases to the final month leading up to the event.
“Brent did all the leg-work,” Larsen said. “He made sure the day ran smoothly.”
In his work with the center, Dance adopted cultural anthropologist Margaret Mead’s creed, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” Dance also plans to apply that motto in his new job at Deloitte Consulting in Seattle.
Paul Allen, a BYU alumnus, CEO of Provo Labs, and founder of Infobases Inc. and 10x Marketing, was named Outstanding Advisory Board Member. This last year, Allen taught an internet marketing class, participated in the e-lecture series, and spoke at the eBusiness Day.
Steve Liddle, director of the center, and John Richards, managing director of the center, selected Allen because of the amount of time and effort he put into the center.
“Paul Allen is a wonderful advisory board member,” Liddle said. “He has come to our rescue whenever we needed him. He\\\'s an excellent example, a great human being, and an active e-business entrepreneur.”
