Patrick Mullen is used to tinkering with things: he began with his family’s first computer.
“It started as an interest,” he says. “I used to play computer games and the first computer we had barely had enough resources to run them. I would have to get into the computer and tinker with it.”
Dallan Quass, member of the Rollins Center for eBusiness Advisory Board, will be honored by Brigham Young University as one the 2006 College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Honored Alumni.
As part of the award, Quass, who is listed by CiteSeer as one of the top one thousand most-cited authors in computer science, will present a lecture to students in the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences 19 October.
Jane* (name has been changed for privacy) wanted to quit smoking, but each day when 4 p.m. rolled around, she craved a cigarette just as much. Those late afternoon hours were the hardest and she was often tempted to just give in. But then her cell phone would ring and the voice on the line would ask her a series of questions, the most important being, “Have you abstained from smoking since the last call?” After answering, the voice of her mother, father, or older brother would sound on the line with a message of encouragement or congratulations.
Jane was a participant in Victory Seeker, a program that utilizes cell phone technology and innovative software to help people break addictions, meet goals, and keep them on the right side of the law.
“This program has the capacity to produce positive changes in the lives of people,” says David Cherrington, a professor of organizational behavior at the Marriott School. Since 2005, Cherrington has served as faculty advisor to BYU’s Real Victory project, a program that works with Victory Seeker to mentor and help change lives.
Since the Kevin and Debra Rollins Center for eBusiness was established in April 2000 we have worked to better prepare our students to excel in a networked and increasingly digitized world. One of our greatest assets is our ability to offer students volunteer work, competitions, and course work that provides real-world experience in e-business.
The center had great success in opening e-business doors to our students last year. We were pleased to give students the opportunity to hear Paul Allen, co-founder of many e-buisnesses, including Infobases, MyFamily and his latest venture ProvoLabs; Josh James, co-founder of Omniture; and Kevin Johnson, co-president of the largest division of Microsoft; at our fall and winter eBusiness Days. Students who participated in our lecture series were also able to hear the experiences and advice of leaders in the information technology industry.
