Advisory Board Member Honored by College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences

Dallan Quass, member of the Rollins Center for eBusiness Advisory Board, will be honored by Brigham Young University as one the 2006 College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Honored Alumni.

As part of the award, Quass, who is listed by CiteSeer as one of the top one thousand most-cited authors in computer science, will present a lecture to students in the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences 19 October.

“I am very honored to be a recipient of this award,” he says. “I never anticipated receiving it, and I’m not sure what I did to deserve it, but I do appreciate it.”

It was a high school teacher who first introduced Quass to computers. As a young man in rural Dawson, Minnesota, Quass spent his free time in the computer lab using a ten-character-per-second teletype machine to dial up a mainframe in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Mainframe disk space was limited, so he stored his work on paper tape.

From those humble beginnings, Quass embarked on a life-long study of computer science. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in computer science from BYU, then began working as a contract programmer. Quass also spent three years with WordPerfect before pursuing a PhD at Stanford University. One of his many career paths brought him back to BYU as a professor. He also co-founded two web search companies and currently serves as president of the Foundation for On-Line Genealogy, a not-for-profit foundation that makes family history research, easier, and faster. He also advises several start-up companies.

Honored Alumni Award recipients are selected each year from every college at BYU and honored at Homecoming. They are featured in the annual College Honored Alumni Lecture Series, invited to a special luncheon with the university president, and are guests of the university at all Homecoming events. Candidates are considered for the outstanding service they render to their profession, community, or nation.
