Second Web Analytics Competition Set to Kick Off

The second Omniture Web Analytics Competition, sponsored by Omniture and the Rollins Center for eBusiness, kicks off this month and offers students a chance to compete for prize money and the opportunity to interview with Omniture. The competition will kick off 7 November at 2 p.m. in 151 TNRB.

“This is an experience students won’t get anywhere else on campus,” says Happy Larsen, program manager for the Center for eBusiness. “It’s an opportunity for students to get cutting-edge technology experience, and it’s an education they can earn money from instead of having to pay for it.”

Omniture provides its Web analytics software to competing students and trains them to use it in a two-hour training session. Then students are turned loose to analyze the effectiveness and efficiency of a real online business. Last year, students used SiteCatalyst, Omniture’s software, to analyze Hobbytron.com, an electronics and technology site, to help the business maximize its sales.

“What I like about the competition is it is right at the heart of e-business because online marketing is becoming increasingly important for businesses of all sizes,” says Stephen Liddle, director of the Center for eBusiness.

This competition is open to all full-time BYU students. Teams of three can enter to compete for cash prizes. First place winners will receive $2,500 and a chance to interview with Omniture for a job. Second- and third-place winners will receive $1,000 and $500, respectively.

“This competition is something all students can participate in regardless of business or technology background,” Liddle says. “We provide the training they need to get their feet wet in online marketing.

Patrick Hillery, a Marriott School alumnus and member of last year’s second-place winning team, interviewed with Omniture after the competition concluded and began working for the company last spring. Hillery, like most of last year’s competitors, had no previous experience using Omniture’s software.

“Thanks to the web analytics competition I have an exciting career in a growing industry,” says Hillery.

Training classes will be on campus 14 November from 7 to 9 p.m. in 240 TNRB. Registration will take place in the Nov. 2 kick-off meeting. For more information, visit the Rollins Center for eBusiness Web site at http://ebusiness.byu.edu/.
