Where Are They Now? Center Alumni Check In

Brent Dance, 2003–06

For Brent Dance, the leadership opportunities he had while serving with the Rollins Center for eBusiness have led to a lifelong love of service. While at the center, Dance held several positions. He worked to organize, create and manage eBusiness Day events. Through his work, he interacted with top professionals from small entrepreneurial and Fortune 100 companies, and learned business professionalism.

“One of my favorite experiences with the center was working alongside more than twenty fellow students to manage a joint eBusiness Day with the Center for Economic Self Reliance,” Dance recalls. “There we meshed altruistic initiatives with technology and welcomed hundreds of professionals and students to participate.”

During his time at BYU, Dance also began a nonprofit organization called Yearn to Learn which develops and researches educational options for Russian orphanages. He continues developing that foundation. Closer to home in Seattle, he and his wife, Andrea, volunteer in local schools offering pro bono consulting and one-on-one tutoring. Professionally, he serves as a business analyst in the strategy and operations group of Deloitte Consulting. There, he works on a wide variety of projects for various clients from all industries to solve complex business problems.

Jeff Dance, 2002–05

Aside from leaving his mark on the Rollins Center for eBusiness, Jeff Dance is making his mark on the world of business consulting. As a consultant in the strategy and operations division of Deloitte Consulting, Dance initiated the advanced financial modeling course known as SuperModeler—a program the company adopted on a national level. Named NorPac 2005 Rookie of the Year at Deloitte, Dance continues to enjoy the challenging combination of skills that consulting demands.

He also enjoys living in Seattle, where he teaches rider improvement courses for new snowboard instructors winter Saturdays. He and his wife, Kari, moved to Seattle after he earned his MAcc from BYU in 2005. Dance is also a CPA.

During his years at BYU, Dance served as a student lead for the center five times. He began the web site competition, co-founded the eLeaven initiative, established Web Developers 2 Go and led the prototype, and organized eBusiness Day on several occasions. Apart from the many activities he was involved in, Dance enjoyed the interaction he had with the staff, teachers, business leaders and center directors.

“As I brushed shoulders with inspirational business leaders, I learned the importance of innovation,” he says. “Aligning yourself with organizations and people that accelerate good ideas is something I learned that has helped significantly in the consulting industry.”

Steve Guymon, 2003–05

While earning his BS in accountancy from the Marriott School, Steve Guymon served in the Rollins Center for eBusiness as the officer of entrepreneurship. He oversaw a number of projects at the center, most notable of which was the HIVE, an online social networking option for LDS professionals.

Following his graduation in 2005, Guymon worked with Ernst and Young, LLP. Currently, he is pursuing an MBA at the University of Texas–Austin where he resides with his wife, Ashley, and daughter. There he is one of eighteen MBA students researching and working for venture capital firms in Texas. Guymon is also currently working to establish a venture capital fund at the university.

Guymon remembers most the personal interaction he had with Owen Cherrington, past director of the center. “I have an autographed book that he wrote that I still keep in my library,” Guymon says. “He was one of the greatest men I have known.”

Joseph Pacini, 2000–02

Joseph Pacini worked in the Rollins Center for eBusiness when it was founded in 2000 until his graduation two years later. As the entrepreneurship student lead, Pacini created a class and consulting project with a local educational software provider that provided students with scholarships.

“The center helped me refine leadership skills,” he says. “I learned the most by working side by side with Owen Cherrington and John Richards as we focused on planning center events. It was a terrific experience that allowed for real-life business experiences in a classroom.”

Pacini earned his BS in business administration from the Marriott School in 2002. He interned at Bain Capital in London before taking a position with JPMorgan Private Bank in New York City, where he serves on the hedge fund platform. He and his wife, Rosalene, reside in New York City with their two children
