Advisory Board Member Works to Make the Internet Safer
Brigham Young University’s Rollins Center for eBusiness welcomes the expertise of business professionals and their advice on best practices for online ventures.
Ralph Yarro, CEO of ThinkAtomic, Inc., a high-tech venture accelerator, and chairman of the SCO Group, Inc., a provider of software technology, is one of these professionals and has devoted his time and resources to fight the growing problem of pornography on the Internet.
“Pornography has made it far too simple to rip apart families and marriages without accountability,” Yarro says. “I believe those who created the Internet did not fully comprehend how it was going to be used.”
Yarro created the CP80 Foundation, which plans to make the Internet safer for people by creating two Internet channels—one for community or general purpose content and the other for open access or adult content—according to the CP80 Web site. The site also indicates that the Internet currently has only one channel, which is open access. By providing these two ports of Internet access, CP80 allows the consumer to make the choice of what they want to view.
“The bottom line is that the Internet has too many problems, and we need to address them,” Yarro says. “It is really an adult environment.”
Yarro’s involvement with the Internet is what he calls the future of business. He advises students that any business must use the Internet to be successful.
“Business today is online business,” Yarro says. “You can’t hope to excel and take advantage of all the opportunities without an online presence. You have to embrace it to succeed today.”
Besides his current involvement with Internet access, Yarro has served in many business leadership positions throughout his career such as CEO of The Canopy Group, an investment firm in Lindon, Utah, chairman of the board of Altiris, Inc., a company that provides IT service-oriented management software, and a mentor of more than 120 other start-up companies.
As someone with experience managing many businesses, Yarro looks forward to his service as a member of the eBusiness Center advisory board. He supports the center and values BYU students.
“I am amazed at the quality of the leadership of the people who run the eBusiness Center at BYU,” Yarro says. “I am also excited to work with them to assist students. Their greatest strength is giving students the ability to participate in real world activities. What I have found specifically in BYU students is that they are above and beyond the highest quality of individuals anywhere.”
