Rollins Center Hires New Student Lead and Videographer
Sandino Roman
The Rollins Center for eBusiness hired a new student lead for the brand new Web Business Idea Competition (WEBIC) at the start of the fall semester.
The student lead, Sandino Roman, brings more than six years of experience in business consulting for companies like Ford and Citi-Group to the center. He plans to make WEBIC, a competition where BYU students can submit web-based business ideas for cash prizes, an instant success.
“We are excited about this competition,” Roman says. “We trust that this competition will become the flagship competition of the eBusiness Center.”
Aside from his involvement with WEBIC, Roman, an MBA student from Iguala, Guerrero, Mexico, has a passion for creativity and innovation. He also enjoys playing chess, watching musicals, and reading books about business and technology.
Roman’s future goals include working for an international business and learning more about culture and its impact on today’s business practices. He also plans on taking advantage of as many business-oriented opportunities as he can throughout his education at BYU. It was this interest that led him to get involved with the center.
“When I was applying for the MBA program at BYU, I described the important role the eBusiness Center was going to play in my education,” Roman says. “Now, I am confirming that role and experiencing firsthand the enormous potential of opportunities the center provides to the students who get involved.”
Jeff Brown, program manager of the eBusiness Center, recognizes Roman’s expertise in the business field.
“Sandino came loaded with talent and experience when we hired him, being a second-year MBA student. His level of professionalism and dedication has enabled us to construct a very solid foundation for the new Web Business Idea Competition. It is not easy being the pioneer of a new competition, but Sandino has been doing a superb job.”
Spencer Paul
The e-business lecture series is an important part of the eBusiness Center and its mission. The course, which is offered during both the fall and winter semesters, allows students to meet and learn from leaders in the e-business industry.
The center hires a student to videotape the series and this semester, Spencer Paul, a junior majoring in accounting from Sequim, Washington, was chosen for the task. Paul says he loves the e-business lectures and attended them weekly before his position at the center.
“I have always enjoyed learning from the lectures, but I also enjoy being in a position where I can help the eBusiness Center achieve its objectives,” Paul says. “I hope to be so reliable and dependable that the leadership of the center will be able to focus on other aspects of the program, rather than worry about the online lectures.”
Aside from his job, Paul enjoys studying Arabic, collecting religious books, and serving as a temple worker at the Provo, Utah, Temple for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He is also actively involved in the Cancer Awareness Group and the American Cancer Society.
As videographer for the center, Paul also videotapes three lecture series for the Center for Entrepreneurship. Spencer is also in charge of editing the videos and uploading them to the center’s web site.
Paul thinks the eBusiness Center is an important asset to a BYU student’s education.
“E-business is an increasingly important component of many areas of study, and using the resources of the eBusiness Center will enhance student’s competitive advantage,” Paul says. “Few universities have the dedicated resources to e-business as BYU does.”
After graduation, Paul plans to pursue a career in anti-fraud. Until then, he plans to make the most of his job at the eBusiness Center.
“The videographer position is very vital to what we do in the center,” says Jeff Brown, program manager of the eBusiness Center. “Many people rely on this valuable service we offer. What I most noted about Spencer was his eagerness to learn about and help improve this service. He is a great addition to our team.”
