eBusiness Day to Focus on Developing Ideas Into Web Businesses

Four representatives from the Utah entrepreneur and venture capital community will be keynote speakers at the semiannual eBusiness Day event on Friday, 16 November. The event will start at 9 a.m. in 151 Tanner Building and will culminate with a raffle that includes an Apple iPhone.

The event, sponsored by the Rollins Center for eBusiness, will focus on how to take a good web business idea to the next level. The four keynote speakers include Jeff Kearl, chief marketing officer of LogoWorks; Nick Efstratis, general partner of Wasatch Ventures; Ben Peterson, member of the Utah Angels Investment Group; and Josh James, CEO of Omniture. These business leaders will address the topic for the event based on their varying backgrounds in entrepreneurship, venture capitalism, and angel investing.

“All of these speakers are active participants, professionals, gurus, and experts on the topics they will be discussing,” says Chase Fly, student lead of eBusiness Day. “They will be approaching it from the angle of someone who has a web business idea and is trying to figure out what to do next.”

eBusiness Day will start at 9 a.m. with the plenary session, the main event, which will feature the four keynote speakers. Then from 10 a.m. to noon, there will be break-out sessions where each of the keynote speakers will answer participants’ questions in a smaller setting.

“The break-out sessions will be a chance for students to more intimately interface with the guest panelists of eBusiness Day,” says John Richards, managing director of the eBusiness Center. “These distinguished experts will explain in more detail their theories and practices of advancing web businesses.”

The culminating activity of eBusiness Day will be the finals of the Web Business Idea Competition (WEBIC) at 2:30pm in 250 Spencer W. Kimball Tower.

WEBIC, which started in early October, gave students the opportunity to enter ideas for the next “big” web-based business like Google or YouTube. This event will feature the four WEBIC finalists, who will be competing for more than $7,000 in cash and prizes.

“Attending this final event will be a great opportunity to hear about some of the best web business ideas coming out of BYU and get to know some savvy and successful entrepreneurs in the web business space,” says Sandino Roman, student lead for WEBIC. “If that’s not incentive enough, we are going to be raffling off a Apple iPhone!”

Fly encourages all students to attend.

“eBusiness Day is a fantastic event for any curious student who has a web business idea or would like to develop an online business in any field,” Fly says. “It’s not just for the ‘techies,’ it is for everyone. Attendees will leave this event with a greater understanding of what it takes to turn an idea into an actual, functioning business.”
