Many a student has reported that the eBusiness Lecture Series was the best course they ever took on campus. This can be directly attributed to the many entrepreneurs who visit the class every week to speak to students about successfully starting and running online ventures.
Speakers in the past have included the likes of Jeremy Hanks, CEO of Doba.com, Patrick Bryne, CEO of Overstock.com, and Josh James, CEO of Omniture. In order to make the eBusiness Lecture Series a success, the Rollins Center hires a T.A. to help manage the class.
At the beginning of winter semester, Tyler Rasmussen became the new T.A. for the lecture series, and he has brought with him a strong determination to make this semester the best yet.
As part of his job, Rasmussen meets prominent business executives and hosts them during their stay on campus. He enjoys the job because of its unique opportunity to network and learn valuable lessons in online business from experts in the field. He says that acquiring skills in e-business is vital in today’s world.
“I have made a conserted effort to help students understand the importance of networking and gaining exposure to the business world, especially through the after-lecture receptions with each speaker that we sponsor,” says Rasmussen, an information systems major from Kissimee, Florida. “I am pleased with the attendance we have had at these events and hope to see more students take advantage of this incredible opportunity.”
Rasmussen believes that his involvement with the lecture series will be a big help to him later in his career.
“I am interested in management consulting, and the principles I learn in the eBusiness Lecture Series will be applicable in evaluating any client’s business needs,” Rasmussen says. “Whether it is by adding an online business division to complement the existing brick and mortar set-up, or if it is using other online markets and the internet to facilitate existing practices, e-business is a critical part of every modern business strategy in some form or fashion.”
Along with his job at the Rollins Center, Rasmussen likes to go snowboarding, hiking, camping, and fishing. He also enjoys playing basketball, all team sports, and his guitar. Rasmussen even was the champion of an inner-tube water polo competition in 2006.
Rasmussen’s commitment and drive to succeed in whatever he sets out to do was one of the reasons he was hired.
“Tyler is a very energetic guy with a lot of drive and commitment to excel,” says Jeff Brown, program manager of the Rollins Center. “The biggest things that stuck out in my mind after his interview was his overall enthusiasm for the T.A. position and his desire to make the most of the opportunity. That enthusiasm and desire has continued since his hiring, and he is proving to be a great addition to our team.”
