eBusiness Day Focuses on Running a Web Business

The Rollins Center for eBusiness held its semiannual eBusiness Day event this last month, which focused on how to successfully start and run a web business.

The event titled “Been There, Done That: An Entrepreneur’s Perspective on Starting a Web Business,” featured speakers who were experts in the field of online ventures. The line-up of speakers included Stephen Liddle, a BYU information systems faculty and CTO of EnticeLabs; Blake Modersitzki, partner at UV Partners; and Jeff Kearl, Chief Marketing Officer of Logoworks by HP.

These speakers gave brief presentations in the event’s plenary session and then met with students in a more personal setting during the breakout sessions. Students at these sessions were given the opportunity to ask questions and network with the speakers.

“I feel that the greatest returns were made in the breakout sessions,” says Jeff Brown, program manager of the eBusiness Center. “We had a good number of students who ended up staying in the same session throughout the three, thirty minute sessions because they had so many questions that they wanted answered by a particular speaker.”

Each speaker at the event presented valuable insights for students interested in starting web businesses. Below is a brief synopsis of what each speaker addressed:

Stephen Liddle: Liddle spoke about the technical side of starting an online business. He shared solutions to some common technical problems associated with starting a web business and talked about how to network with “techies.”

Blake Modersitzki: As a partner with a venture capital fund based in Utah, Modersitzki talked to students about how to begin a viable business and approach investors with professional business plans.

Jeff Kearl: Kearl, a co-founder of a logo design company sold to HP in 2007, talked about how to make a web business attractive to investors and customers.

eBusiness Day also had a great turnout with close to four hundred students in attendance.

“The attendance at eBusiness Day was fantastic,” says Chase Fly, student lead of the event. “Students also gave very positive feedback about the event. They seemed to like its open-forum presentation style.”

The event is central to the Rollins Center’s mission. Brown says this semester’s eBusiness Day addressed all three aspects of that mission.

“eBusiness Day helped prepare students to be business leaders in today’s technological world and put them in connection with faculty and industry professionals who are at the forefront of that world,” Brown says. “Technology is a fundamental aspect of conducting business in today’s society, and as long as that is the case there is a vital need to help students understand how they can leverage it for their benefit. Those who understand the foundational principles behind online business and are able to network with the movers and shakers in the field will have a significant advantage over those who do not.”
