Mentored Learning Proposals

The Kevin and Debra Rollins Center for eBusiness at Brigham Young University solicits mentored learning project proposals for work relating to the mission of of the center. A "mentored learning project" involves and benefits students in a meaningful way. Two- to three-page proposals should be submitted to Stephen Liddle (liddle@byu.edu), Academic Director of the eBusiness center. In your proposal, please include the following:

  • A description of the work to be performed
  • A detailed budget
  • An explanation of how students will benefit from participating in this project
  • Expected deliverables of the project
  • Any other information you think would be helpful to us in evaluating your proposal

Budget Guidelines. Funds requested can support travel, survey costs, participant costs, research assistants, and other out-of-pocket expenses. You may also request faculty stipends subject to University compensation limits (at most 4.5% of eight-month contract salary up to $4,500). Budgets should be organized around semester-sized milestones. Project funds will be released on a semester-by-semester basis, contingent upon adequate progress. Award sizes are flexible, but are typically $3,000 to $10,000.

Approval Process. The eBusiness Faculty Steering Committee will screen proposals and bring finalists to our Advisory Board meeting. Finalists may be invited to spend 5-10 minutes presenting their proposal to the eBusiness Research Committee (which includes faculty, Advisory Board members, and students). Following Advisory Board input, final decisions will be made by the Faculty Steering Committee.

Project Management and Reporting. The eBusiness center is deploying a Web-based project management system that must be used to track funded projects. We expect funded project managers to update the system with regular reports that will be posted automatically to the project Web page under ebusiness.byu.edu. Funds will be released as the system is updated. We expect the results of funded projects to be presented at one of our center-sponsored activities such as a brown bag seminar. We expect to receive significant "public relations" benefit from funded projects. We will advertise the results of your work, and we require that center funding be acknowledged in your publications (e.g., statements like "Funded [or funded in part] by the Rollins Center for eBusiness at Brigham Young University" in customary locations).

Budget Guidelines. Funds requested can support travel, survey costs, participant costs, research assistants, and other out-of-pocket expenses. You may also request faculty stipends subject to University compensation limits (at most 4.5% of eight month contract salary up to $4,500). If there are many good proposals we may choose to apply a "line-item veto" to stipends in order to accommodate more research. Budgets should be organized around milestones (semester-sized milestones are convenient for us). We encourage attaching stipends (or a portion thereof) to publication milestones. Award sizes are flexible, but are typically $5,000 to $10,000.
